STEP THREE:
ABOLITION + MUTUAL AID PRACTICE

Now the work begins.

Liberation has no room for white saviors.

Graduates of the Better Elders 'Deprogramming Whiteness' curriculum must radically transform the way we practice our politics currently:

  1. We should organize their own 'Deprogramming Whiteness' community cohorts with ourselves as facilitators. Consider getting your local SURJ chapter, group of friends, or church or synagogue group together. Ready to start your Better Elders journey

  2. We must internalize the cost of white supremacy, using the theory of True Cost, an embedded practice of the climate justice movement.

  3. We must join Black, brown and Indigenous people organizing on the ground around abolition. Curious about what this practice may look like?

Climate Justice

Find a mutual aid community in your town to join. Here's ours: Crown Heights Mutual Aid.

Go to court with a neighbor; pay

bail. Be pen pals with incarcerated

folk: Study and Struggle.

Organize a rent strike. Find a tenant union in your city. Here's ours: Crown Heights Tenant Union.

Loudly criticize police, like Care Collective. Find alternatives, with Don't Call The Police.

Join the Poor People's Campaign, or divest from poverty with End Poverty in America

Get your hands dirty. Organize with Extinction Rebellion (XR) or Indigenous Climate Action.

Practicing abolition and mutual aid in community is not easy. Black, brown and Indigenous communities have been practicing for generations, and we are blessed to rely on tools and resources that they have created. Better Elders is committed to acknowledging and compensating these elders for their labor. Critical practice resources include:

  1. Fumbling Towards Repair: A Workbook for Community Accountability Facilitators (Mariame Kaba, Shira Hassan)

  2. Turning Towards Each Other: A Conflict Workbook (Jovida Ross & Weyam Ghadbian)

A NOTE: The goal of Better Elders participants is the PRACTICE stage. Each cohort will add to the mutual aid and abolition toolkit for white people who are deeply committing to the destruction of white supremacy.
